Visit of Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian to Berlin (June 19, 2020)
Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will travel to Berlin on June 19, at the invitation of his German counterpart, Mr. Heiko Maas, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, for bilateral consultations then a ministerial meeting in E3 format with their British counterpart, Mr. Dominic Raab devoted to the Iranian dossier.
This visit to Germany is in line with the close cooperation that has prevailed between the two ministers in recent months in the context of the health crisis. After the lifting of traffic restrictions at our common border, the Minister and his counterpart will consult on the terms for the gradual lifting of controls at the external borders of the European Union from July 1, if the health situation allows and more to the European Commission's proposals.
This visit also takes place shortly before the start of the German presidency of the Council of Ministers of the European Union in the second half of 2020. Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian will discuss with his German counterpart the major European and international issues of the day and will discuss the prospects for enhanced cooperation between our two countries in the context of the priorities that Germany wishes to highlight during the next semester. With regard to international files, the Minister will in particular discuss the situation in the Sahel, the peace process in the Middle East, the relationship with Turkey and the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, the Libyan and Iranian files, as well as the relationship between the European Union and China.
The two ministers will also discuss cooperation between Germany and France at the United Nations, while Germany will assume in July, after France in June, the presidency of the Security Council, as well as on their joint action in favor strengthening the multilateral system and the global health architecture. The ministerial meeting in E3 format devoted to the Iranian dossier will be an opportunity to discuss the European strategy for the coming months. In this context, Jean-Yves Le Drian will underline our objective of preserving the Vienna nuclear agreement of 2015, which is essential in the global architecture of non-proliferation, and our shared will that Iran respects its obligations. in the matter. The Minister will also discuss our cooperation in the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency, our continued support for the IAEA and our expectations of Iran in its full and prompt cooperation with the Agency.
