Mexico;s teacher union chief arrested for embezzling over $150 million

Mexico`s teacher union chief, Elba Esther Gordillo Morales, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly embezzling around 2 billion pesos ($160 million), officials said. Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said Gordillo, 68, and leader of the country`s National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), which has around 1.5 million members, was arrested in Toluca`s international airport, located 63 kilometers (39Â miles) west-southwest of Mexico City.
Federal Police agents arrested Gordillo before being transferred to the women`s prison of Santa Martha Acatitla. Gordillo is being accused of embezzling millions of dollars into bank accounts in Switzerland and the United States, carrying out a luxury lifestyle with high-end credits and properties in the U.S. Authorities believe she also used funds to acquire works of art and have a number of plastic surgeries.
